NUNSENSE in August!

Coming in August

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Rockdale Musical Society would like to thank you for your support during the closure of the Rockdale Town Hall. It has been a difficult process reinventing ourselves in new performances spaces, whilst still providing you the same quality shows that you have expected from us for over 7 decades. Your support is invaluable to us and we thank you, for without there is no way that we could bring our productions to the stage.

At the end of August 2012 we are pleased to bring you the much loved comedy classic, Nunsense!
Nunsense begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters, and they are in dire need of funds for the burials. The sisters decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show, so they take over the school auditorium, which is currently set up for the eighth grade production of “Grease.” Here we meet Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head. Featuring star turns, tap and ballet dancing, an audience quiz, and comic surprises, this show has become an international phenomenon. With more than 5000 productions worldwide, it has been translated into 21 languages.

We welcome new and previous members to Rockdale Musical Society as part of the cast of Nunsense; Leonie Johnson as Reverend Mother , Renee Bechara as Sister Mary Hubert, Rozlyne Vidal as Sister Robert Anne, Virginia Natoli as Sister Mary Amnesia, and Lauren Mellor as Sister Mary Leo.

We have welcomed back from our past shows Director’s James Worner (Cats) to head this comedy ensemble show, and Andy Peterson (Hairspray) as the Musical Director. Ste Casimiro will be handling the Choreography.

ATTN: THEATRE COMPANIES – READ THIS!

Theatre Junkies would like to help build up the ‘community’ of community theatre groups. As far as we can tell, theatre junkies is the only community theatre information service that is free to use, free to access, not affiliated with any specific theatre group or commercial organisation, and can be accessed through a website that does not require users to have an account (such as Facebook). Like you, the people behind Theatre Junkies do it purely for the love of the theatre.

If you would like to support Theatre Junkies in our mission to help build the greater community theatre community, we have two offers to make to all non-profit theatre groups.

1. Reciprocal Advertising. There are two forms of reciprocal advertising that you can take advantage of: A) Place a graphic or text ad on the front page of your company website that tells the world that you advertise auditions and show details with Theatre Junkies, and we will create a searchable category under the name of your theatre company, making it easier for theatre fans to find your notices. B) Place an add for Theatre Junkies in your program, and Theatre Junkies will host a banner ad for that production on a dedicated ‘upcoming productions’ page, giving it additional exposure to Theatre Junkies visitors.

2. Theatre Junkies Reviews. If you would like an independent review of a production published online at the start of the season, Theatre Junkies has a small team of writers to call on to review your shows. You provide two tickets to your preview or opening night, and we will have a review posted on our website to help with the promotion of your show.

For more information, or to book in your ads or review, email theatrejunkiesaustralia@gmail.com.

AUDITION!!! – FEMALE PRINCIPAL ROLE AVAILABLE

AUDITION NOTICE. FABULOUS PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITY FOR STRONG FEMALE
ACTOR/SINGER!!!

The next Stage Artz Charity Musical, The Emperor’s New Clothes, has started
rehearsals. the cast is very impressive and the show is off to an incredible
start!!

Unfortunately, one principal cast member has been called away on a business
trip and is unable to continue with the show. We are looking for a female
actor to take on the role of Mama – the role calls for a strong singer with
great comic timing – someone who is able to look 40-ish. (Although the
principal roles are all played by adults, there are children in the
ensemble. so the performer needs to feel comfortable working with kids.)

Rehearsals are Thursday nights and Sunday afternoons (plus a few Saturday
afternoons). Nine performances at Glen Street Theatre – 28th Sept to 6th
Oct.

Stage Artz Charity Musicals have now raised over $93,000.00 for The
Children’s Hospital at Westmead. 2012 is a big year for us, as we are
hoping this year’s production will take our donation total to over
$100,000.00.

This is a great opportunity for someone to play a fantastic role in an
Australian Premiere production .. and to help out the kids at Westmead
Hospital.

Please contact sam asap if you are interested in
auditioning.

FAMS Theatre Company The Mikado

Taking the lead from operetta’s Victorian heyday and embracing the legacy of WS Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, this production draws on the exoticism of medieval Japan and catapults it into the land-that-never-was: the nineteenth century steam-driven space-age.

FAMS Theatre Company, the grand dame of the Northern Beaches community theatre scene is back in its 41st year with an entirely new production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado.

For the rebirth of FAMS it seemed fitting to choose the most popular of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, the classic “Japanese” fantasy. In reality, The Mikado is about as Japanese as swiss cheese, and has at least as many holes. Yet casts, crew and audiences alike have loved the show and it has run almost without faltering all over this massive globe for 125 years.

But this production will be unlike anything you think you have seen before.

Since when did our Victorian great-grandparents travel on interstellar airships? Since Jules Verne, the grandfather of science fiction. Verne’s works inspired us with new ways to dream. Just as Victorian entrepreneurs were exploring and exploiting the exotic east, Verne’s stories strode out across the unchartered depths of our imagination, from the mysteries of our own planet to our nearest solar neighbours. In search of the exotic today, FAMS’ Artistic Director, Patty Macintosh, has fused the future past of Jules Verne and the present past of WS Gilbert to explore a new and original exoticism: the contemporary “Steampunk” movement.

FAMS’ The Mikado is set to bring a whole new world to Gilbert and Sullivan aficionados everywhere. While clinging to the original script and score, this production is here to both inspire the loyal G&S fan-base and to enthral those coming to the operetta for the very first time.

The fusion of both seasoned and new performers in the streamlined cast are the catalyst for this unique production. From the dramatic actors playing Katisha and Mikado, the veteran comic Pooh-Bah, the adorable, real-life couple playing Nanki-Poo and Yum-Yum, to the student performers Ko-Ko and Pitti-Sing, not discounting the eclectic ensemble, this cast is proof that Gilbert and Sullivan’s operettas unite people in the love of the genre.

Complete with goggles, steam, leather, brass and velvet, the intrepid adventurers will venture forth on the all-new, dirigible Mikado for seven brilliant performances at The Montgomery Theatre, Collaroy Plateau (within the War Vets Retirement Village) from June 29th.

Visit the FAMS website for tickets and further details.
